Features: Reading accounts for a significant portion in the TEM-8 exam. In the past two years, with changes in the syllabus, its difficulty has also increased. Students preparing for the TEM-8 often face tight graduation schedules, heavy tasks, and generally lack sufficient time for reading training. Based on these circumstances, we have researched past exam papers, analyzed recent trends in the TEM-8 exam, and developed this preparatory guidebook specifically for reading training, following the 2004 syllabus for the TEM-8. This book has the following features:
1. Standardized Selection, New Themes, and Simulated Questions
The compilers of this book have studied the selection patterns of past exam papers and carefully compiled 25 sets of questions, including 20 authentic TEM-8 reading passages and 80 passages similar in theme and difficulty to those in the TEM-8. The themes cover social, cultural, educational, economic, scientific, literary, everyday knowledge, and biographical content. In terms of genre, as the TEM-8 exam has seen a recent trend toward more literary passages in the reading section, we have followed this trend by selecting passages in the same proportion as the exam. In terms of question setting, based on the structure of the TEM-8 exam, each unit includes questions such as detail-based, inference-based, attitude-based, main idea-based, and semantic understanding questions, all in the same proportion as the exam.
2. Graduated Difficulty, Progressive Training, and Incremental Improvement
The 100 reading exercises in this book are divided into three levels. Considering the decisive guiding role of past exam papers, we have compiled the last five years of TEM-8 reading questions in the "Exam Practice Section" of this book, accompanied by precise explanations. This allows candidates to familiarize themselves with the selection tendencies and question-setting patterns of the exam, understand the gap between their current level and the exam requirements, and proceed with targeted, effective practice.
3. Vocabulary Annotations, Bilingual Explanations, and Enhanced Memory
Some words in TEM-8 reading passages may fall within the syllabus but are uncommon in daily reading, often causing confusion for candidates. To address this, this book annotates such common key vocabulary in both Chinese and English, enabling candidates to grasp the words in the context of the passages. This is undoubtedly a scientific method for memorizing vocabulary. Out-of-syllabus words appear less frequently but are often points of confusion. Therefore, this book annotates all such words in each passage, helping candidates better understand the meaning of the text and infer the meanings of unfamiliar words.
4. Summaries of Main Ideas, Concise Outlines, and Deepened Comprehension
The difficulty of TEM-8 passages should not be underestimated. To help candidates grasp the main ideas of the passages and avoid getting lost in details, we provide concise summaries for each passage, allowing candidates to understand the overall structure before tackling specific questions—ensuring efficiency and effectiveness.
5. Detailed Explanations, Key Difficulties, and Step-by-Step Solutions
When explaining answers, we strive for thoroughness. Following the five main question types—main idea, attitude, inference, detail, and semantic understanding—we provide detailed explanations based on the different examination methods and purposes of each type. All relevant information in the passage is listed, complex sentences are translated, confusing points are analyzed, and the reasoning behind answer choices is clearly explained, with distractors logically ruled out.
6. Translation Techniques, Synchronized Training, and Mutual Benefits
Translation accounts for a significant portion of the TEM-8 exam, and the prerequisite for translation is comprehension. During reading practice, candidates have already gained a preliminary understanding of the passages. Building on this foundation, translating key sections of the passages not only saves time in searching for translation exercises but also reinforces reading comprehension and improves translation skills for passages of similar difficulty to the TEM-8—truly a win-win approach!
7. Practical Theories, Tiered Guidance, and Personalized Advice
At the end of each chapter, we provide a summary. Based on the content, difficulty, and common issues encountered by candidates at different levels in each chapter, we create a scoring tier table. Candidates are divided into different levels based on their scores, and targeted guidance is provided to address the specific reading skills and question types where they are weakest, enabling them to improve their abilities effectively.
