"The main text" strives for conciseness and accuracy, capable of being verified and checked. "The subtext" narrates the causes and developments of events, aiming for completeness and objectivity, without including descriptions or comments unrelated to the events. The references are based on the selection scope of "Selected Important Documents since the Founding of the People's Republic of China," primarily including documents of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China; important national laws and regulations; conference resolutions; important speeches, telegrams, and influential editorials or articles in the People's Daily at the time that held guiding significance nationwide. It avoids chaos and disorganization.
Annotations are divided into three types:
First type: Name and place annotations;
Second type: Research annotations, which analyze and compare various accounts and different viewpoints regarding a single event, explaining the reasons for adopting a particular account in this volume.
Third type: Background annotations, limited by the daily entry format, provide supplementary information on the remote background of events that cannot be fully covered in the "subtext," enabling readers to understand the causes of the events.
This volume, based on the 1949 edition, appropriately increases the number of illustrations. The compilation of this volume not only highlights major events but also maintains the completeness of major event trails, recording details of each event day by day and month by month, which, when strung together by year, form the basic framework of the events. These events mainly include: Mao Zedong's visit to the Soviet Union and the signing of the "Sino-Soviet Treaty of Friendship, Alliance, and Mutual Assistance"; the Third Plenary Session of the Seventh Central Committee of the CCP; the decision-making process of the Central Committee of the CCP regarding the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea, and the three major battles; the national movement to resist U.S. aggression and aid Korea and to defend the homeland; major events of the democratic parties; land reform in new areas; the second session of the First National People's Political Consultative Conference; the Party and helping industries and commerce overcome operational difficulties; victories over various natural disasters in different regions; large-scale reclamation and production by the armed forces; social assistance to unemployed workers; reforms in the education system; the establishment of scientific research institutions; the development of mass health care; and all aspects of news, publishing, ethnic affairs, religious affairs, social issues, and mass organizations. In foreign relations, the main events include China establishing diplomatic relations with people's democratic countries and neighboring countries, as well as important events such as China-U.S., China-Soviet, and China-United Nations relations and negotiations. Special attention is given to incorporating newly released archives and historical materials from domestic and international sources, including biographies, chronicles, and diaries.
