The novel was published in 1891 and remains one of the most delicately moving portrayals of a woman's inner life to this day. It is a sorrowful book: a girl's life is slowly but surely destroyed—not by her enemies, but by those who claim to love her. What kind of love is this? How can it destroy the one she loves? Sadness arises when we witness mistakes happening helplessly, unable to intervene. Tess was a joyful girl, her life should have been very happy—yet the right person hesitated, while the wrong one moved quickly. "Don't let her go!" we can't help but shout, or "Tell him now before it's too late!" But it's too late: the story takes place a hundred years ago—yet it replays itself every day. We are powerless, able to do nothing but watch the world change and turn, destroying Tess, and then continuing to change and turn as if she had never existed.
