Alternative Philosophy (Postmodern Culture of Modern Society)

Author: Cai Zhengyun
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2006-10-01
Features: The term "postmodernism" is all the rage, but very few people truly understand or can articulate what it is. Starting from a philosophical perspective and delving into everyday life, this book clarifies the cultural logic of postmodernism and, in doing so, reflects on contemporary philosophy, giving rise to an "alternative philosophy" that re-examines the fundamental issues of philosophy: from logic to deconstruction, truth to play, existence to simulation, ethics to desire, and art to ideology. Thus, this book is not only a study of postmodern culture but also a philosophical introduction with a fresh perspective.
The term "postmodernism" is all the rage, but very few people truly understand or can articulate what it is. This book, starting from a philosophical perspective and written in a way that is accessible to modern realities and general readers, focuses on clarifying the cultural logic of postmodernism and, from this, reflects on contemporary philosophy, re-examining some of philosophy's traditional issues, such as modern society and the Enlightenment, capitalism and postmodern culture, logic and deconstruction, truth and play, existence and simulation, ethics and desire, and art and ideology. In this way, it gives rise to an "alternative philosophy" that both subverts traditional philosophy while remaining within the existing understanding of philosophy. This book is not only a study of postmodern culture but also a philosophical introduction with a fresh perspective. It is also an important monograph by Professor Cai Zhengyun of Taiwan, following his previous work, From Phenomenology to Postmodernism.
