Features: Based on historical examination, realistic analysis, and theoretical exploration, this book discusses the concept of modern Chinese universities. The book is divided into five parts:
Part 1: Introduction. It discusses the concept of university philosophy from the perspective of problem-raising, analyzes the current state of university philosophy research in China and the various shortcomings in universities, and highlights the importance and necessity of researching modern Chinese university philosophy.
Part 2: Historical Examination. It analyzes the philosophy of classical Chinese universities, the philosophy of Western universities in different periods, and the philosophy of Peking University during the Cai Yuanpei era.
Part 3: Realistic Analysis. It examines the philosophy of universities in New China and the philosophy of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, which grew up during the New China era. This realistic analysis helps deepen our understanding of Chinese universities and their philosophies, facilitating the further construction of modern Chinese university philosophy.
Part 4: Theoretical Analysis. First, drawing on the views of John S. Brubacher, who argues that the philosophical foundations of universities mainly include epistemological philosophy and political philosophy, the book suggests that rationalist university philosophy and instrumentalist university philosophy can largely be attributed to these two philosophical foundations, while existentialist philosophy represents a comprehensive transformation of philosophical thought. Next, it discusses the relationships between humanities and science, inheritance and innovation, adaptation and guidance, as well as academic responsibility and academic freedom in university philosophy. It points out that dialectically handling these relationships is both an embodiment of an ideal university and a beneficial strategy for realizing university philosophy.
Part 5: Prospects. The basic framework is: upholding the traditional spirit of universities, transcending the "ivory tower," and moving toward diversification. It states that modern Chinese universities must adhere to the essence of traditional university philosophy while adapting to the times, becoming a core institution driving comprehensive social progress, and serving as the knowledge center of a learning society.
