Features: Since the third edition of this book was published in May 1999, it has been widely used in many higher education institutions. In this revision, in response to the needs of cultivating high-level engineering and technical talents in China in the 21st century, significant adjustments and adaptations have been made to the overall structure and chapter arrangement. The book consistently follows a guiding principle that starts with understanding the overall picture of machinery, analyzes the composition, motion relationships, and functions, structures, and designs of general components, and progresses to the completion of transmission device design. It places particular emphasis on the analysis and design of mechanical parts and simple mechanical transmission devices. For non-uniform transmission mechanisms such as linkages and cam mechanisms, they are introduced as a branch of mechanical transmission after the design of transmission devices. Through this arrangement, it is expected to better enhance students' comprehensive problem-solving and mechanical design abilities. The book is divided into fourteen chapters and can be grouped into four major sections: Chapter 1, Introduction, covers the composition of machines, design requirements for components, material selection, and the conditions for mechanisms to have definite motion. Chapters 2 to 10 discuss the design and calculation of general components. Chapter 11 integrates the design methods of mechanical transmission devices. Chapters 12 to 14 focus on the motion analysis and design of non-uniform motion mechanisms. Each chapter includes key learning objectives, along with corresponding examples, exercises, open transmission device design problems, and necessary data, which can meet the requirements of homework and course design assignments for this course. Additionally, the appendix provides common heat treatment methods for steel, lubricants and their selection principles, as well as examples of open transmission device design for reference by readers. This book is primarily intended as a textbook for "Fundamentals of Mechanical Design" courses in non-mechanical disciplines of higher engineering colleges, with an appropriate teaching duration of approximately 60 hours. It can also be used as a reference for relevant engineering technicians and students in universities and vocational colleges.
