Condoleezza Rice was born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1954, and is Black. Her father was once the vice president of the University of Denver, and her mother was a primary school music teacher. At the age of 15, she entered the University of Denver to study British literature and American political science. She graduated at 19 with a bachelor's degree in political science. Later, she obtained a master's degree in political science from the University of Notre Dame and a Ph.D. in political science from the graduate school of international studies at the University of Denver. Her mentor was the father of former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. In 1981, at the age of 26, she became a professor at Stanford University. From 1985 to 1986, she was a researcher at the Hoover Institution. From 1989 to 1991, she served as the Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs. From 1991 to 1993, she was a senior researcher at the Hoover Institution. From 1993 to July 1, 1999, she served as the Provost of Stanford University. She was the youngest provost in the university's history and also the first Black provost. On January 1, 2001, she became the Special Advisor to President George W. Bush on National Security Affairs.
Rice accompanied President George W. Bush on a working visit to China in February 2002. In July 2004, Rice visited China. She is fluent in Russian and is an expert in Russian (Soviet) arms control issues. She is clear in her thinking, precise in identifying issues, and has strong explanatory skills. She is knowledgeable and diligent. She enjoys watching sports and is an excellent pianist.
