Features: Drucker is hailed as the "Father of Modern Management" and a pioneer and seer in management thought. He could always see trends in the business environment before others and timely propose ideas that set the tone for the times. For example, in the 1950s, he foresaw the significant impact of computers on business management, and by the 1960s, he predicted that Japan would challenge the United States' position in manufacturing. He was a scholar who proposed the concepts of privatization and knowledge workers, as well as an advocate for customer orientation and goal management. The fact that management has become a prominent field today and that businesses have become a pillar of society can be attributed to Drucker's contributions. He elevated management from a technical tool to a level of thought, culture, strategy, and society. Drucker was deeply humanistic and socially conscious, never viewing corporate activities through narrow, short-sighted lenses but instead seeing many issues related to people, organizations, society, and the environment. He taught at the Stern School of Business at New York University (NYU) for 20 years, fundamentally transforming the landscape of management education, shifting it from a quantitative tool for assessing cost efficiency to a human-centered approach to organizational operations and strategic planning. Although Drucker was once seen as a conservative pro-capitalist, he also harshly criticized CEOs for receiving excessively high compensation and recognized the positive role of labor unions. He was also an idealist with high expectations for corporate organizations, advocating for the retreat of the state and government, viewing businesses as public instruments of society and a crucial tool for driving social progress. However, in his later years, he unfortunately witnessed the decline of GM, the deceptive behavior of managers in the Enron scandal, and instances where companies faced massive losses while CEOs continued to receive high salaries. This also led him to dedicate more of his energy to the management of non-profit organizations, particularly focusing on three types of groups: schools, hospitals, and religious organizations. Drucker's life spanned a vast range of interests, from culture, art, politics, and society to general business management. Despite being regarded as one of history's most influential management gurus, he remained extremely humble, considering himself merely a social observer. A persistent criticism of the management academic community has been its tendency to echo others' opinions and offer hindsight after the fact, yet a master like Drucker could anticipate what others could not see. The Chinese saying goes, "The person in the situation is blind, but the observer is clear." A wise person standing at a high vantage point naturally sees farther. Although he spent his career studying businesses, he always maintained a distance, allowing him to discern the underlying patterns in the complex commercial world. Writing a column for The Wall Street Journal for 20 years further honed his keen social observation skills. He believed that with ample knowledge and a broad perspective, one could easily predict future changes by grasping the fundamental principles and operational patterns. For example, predicting a stock market bubble was not difficult—when many people in society achieve wealth without effort, it is a sign of a bubble. Many fail to see the future because their minds are clouded by excessive desires. While reminiscing about Drucker, we can't help but sigh about the absence of a Chinese management master in today's world. The environment China faces today is vastly different from what it once was.
