Features: Mr. Zheng Yimei (1895-1992) is a renowned figure in Chinese literary and historical anecdotes, both in China and abroad. Since 1913, he has been publishing his works in newspapers and magazines, and even in his advanced years, he continued to write without ceasing, creating a remarkable legend in the literary world. His writings primarily focus on anecdotes from the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China, drawing from a vast array of sources to create a grand collection, which has become invaluable for understanding the modern literary scene. In his early works, Mr. Zheng often used classical Chinese, concise and subtle, with an elegant charm; while in his later years, his masterpieces blended vernacular Chinese with classical elements, where the flow of his pen and the depth of human insight harmoniously combine knowledge and entertainment. These works, with their unique prose style and accessible yet refined tone, have won the admiration of readers from all walks of life. During his lifetime, Mr. Zheng compiled over forty books. After his passing, his family continued to publish several of his unfinished works. However, most of these standalone volumes were published many years ago and are now difficult to find in the market. Now, with the consent of Mr. Zheng’s family, Zhonghua Book Company has selected his representative works and compiled them into the Zheng Yimei Collection, which will be published in standalone volumes to delight readers. Nanshe Congtan: History and Figures, originally titled Nanshe Congtan, was first published by Shanghai People’s Publishing House in 1981. In 1991, Heilongjiang People’s Publishing House included this book in the Zheng Yimei Selected Works (Volume ). Now, based on the 1981 first edition by Shanghai People’s Publishing House, this book has been retypeset and slightly revised. Obvious printing errors have been corrected directly, and necessary explanations have been added in small notes for the discerning reader’s attention.
