The arrangement of figures in the book is first listed as the emperors, empresses, imperial family, and princesses of the Tang Dynasty, followed by figures from each dynasty of the Tang Dynasty, then the emperors and family members of the Five Dynasties, figures from the Five Dynasties, and figures from the Ten Kingdoms, all in chronological order. Finally, figures whose specific era is difficult to determine are arranged according to the era of the source material. Each entry in the book is numbered, and the main deeds are arranged in chronological order, with those of unclear dates generally categorized. If one event involves multiple figures, it is listed under the main figure, and references are provided for other figures as appropriate. The book does not include official histories, with the main collection range being miscellaneous histories, biographies, stories, and novels written by Tang and Song Dynasty authors. Materials similar to official historical records are included if they were written before official histories to show the source of official records. Materials written after official histories and clearly derived from official records are excluded. Materials from the Ming and Qing Dynasties are generally not included unless they are credible and have no earlier records. Strict criteria are applied to classified compendia.
