Features: The Spring and Autumn Annals of Yan is an ancient book with unique characteristics among the pre-Qin philosophers. It was first identified as belonging to the "Confucian school," later regarded as a work of the Mohists, and some even consider it a spurious creation from the Six Dynasties period. The entire book contains both the content of philosophical treatises and the style of historical works like The Strategies of the Warring States. It is described as an early historical record yet places great emphasis on character portrayal, leading some to view it as a collection of short stories. Yan Zi and Confucius lived around the same time, with Yan Zi being slightly earlier. Both emphasized the role of "ritual and music" in governance and politics and advocated "benevolence." However, in the content of this book, their views often differ, and conflicts arise on certain issues. Such a classic vividly reflects the extraordinary vitality of cultural and intellectual life during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, making it highly worth reading and understanding. The concise and clear annotations and fluent translations in this book have opened an accessible gateway for readers.
Daoism and literature belong to the disciplines of philosophy and literature, respectively. Historically, scholars of philosophy rarely engaged with literature, and literary scholars seldom delved into philosophy. This book, however, falls under interdisciplinary research, combining philosophy and literature to explore new questions and propose fresh perspectives. Daoism and literature are two major disciplines in the history of Chinese culture. Most renowned Daoist scholars themselves possessed high literary attainments, and many famous literary figures adhered to Daoist thought. Therefore, clarifying the relationship between Daoism and literature is not only beneficial for in-depth research on Daoism and determining its position in cultural history but also helps further understand the thoughts, lives of literary figures, and the development of literary trends. This book provides annotations and translations for the entire Spring and Autumn Annals of Yan. Yan Zi's thought essentially belongs to the Mohist school, advocating "universal love," "non-aggression," "rejection of music," "frugality in expenditure," and "frugality in burial." The Mohists held differing views on Confucianism, with the Non-Confucian section being particularly representative. The Spring and Autumn Annals of Yan is a record of the words and deeds of Yan Ying, a famous statesman and thinker of the Spring and Autumn period. The book consists of 8 volumes, including 6 inner volumes (Advising the Rulers, Upper and Lower; Seeking Office, Upper and Lower; Miscellaneous, Upper and Lower) and 2 outer volumes, totaling 215 chapters, all composed of short stories. Through vivid and lively tales, the book portrays the main character, Yan Ying, and numerous supporting figures. While these stories cannot be taken as entirely reliable historical records, most are based on some truth and can be cross-referenced with works like Zuo Zhuan, Guoyu, and Lüshi Chunqiu to serve as materials reflecting the social and historical landscape of late Spring and Autumn period Qi.
Yan Ying (c. 522–500 BCE), styled Pingzhong, was from Yivu (present-day Gaomi, Shandong). He served as the chief minister of Qi during the Spring and Autumn period, holding office under the reigns of the rulers Ling, Zhuang, and Jing for over fifty years. Known for his frugality, diligence, humility, and respect for scholars, he paid attention to political reforms and cared for the people, opposing superstitious practices like prayers for blessings and averting disasters. This book provides a multi-faceted account of Yan Ying's words, deeds, and political activities, highlighting his political ideas and moral character.
