Features: This book selects rural Christianity in X Town, Y County, South China, as a case study, with urbanization as the primary form of social change in the local context, serving as the research background. This study views religion as a form of social organization and adopts an organizational analysis perspective within the framework of open systems theory. By examining the organizational structure, operational mechanisms, goals of the church, the social composition and action logic of its followers, and the interactive relationships between the church and local grassroots power organizations and relevant administrative departments, it aims to understand the organizational structure and operational characteristics of the church during periods of social change and rapid transformation. On this basis, it conducts a preliminary exploration of the position of Christianity within the local social structure. These two issues are interrelated: an analysis of the organizational characteristics and operational mechanisms of the church is a prerequisite for determining its social structural position, while the organizational characteristics of the church are, to some extent, determined by its position within the social structure. The book's logical starting point is to analyze the church's characteristics through organizational research, which is largely approached from several levels: the systemic structure of the church organization, its operational mechanisms, the individual level, and the interactive relationships between the church and surrounding social organizations. The systemic structure primarily explores the internal organizational framework of the church. The operational mechanisms examine the process of the church's operation, which can be further broken down into three aspects: interactive patterns at the group level, the production and output of church products and services, and the input of resources. Group-level interaction includes internal communication and decision-making processes within the church, as well as the organizational power and authority structure reflected in these processes. The production and output of church products and services involve the actual internal operational processes of the church organization, while the input of resources discusses the specific methods of recruiting staff and raising funds. Through a detailed analysis of these levels, the book aims to clarify certain internal characteristics of the church organization and the pathways through which its religious and social expressions are manifested, which is one of the rational resources for the existence of the church organization. During the church's operational process, the organizational structure and the composition of its members play a decisive role in the actual organizational processes and performance of the church. Since the organizational structure has already been discussed earlier, the book then explores the fourth level—individual-level characteristics of the church organization, primarily through the analysis of the social characteristics and action logic of its followers. This serves as both a specific manifestation of the boundaries between the church organization and the outside world and a reflection of the operational performance of the church organization. The first four levels are essentially horizontal analyses of internal factors, while the fifth level—the interactive relationships between the church organization and the external environment—belongs to a vertical analysis. It primarily examines the ways in which the church interacts with local grassroots power organizations and relevant administrative departments. These relationships reflect the church's positioning of its own development and the expectations of the outside world regarding the church organization and its followers. At what level can these two aspects be unified, and to what extent are they consistent? At what level do they diverge, and why do these divergences occur? These are the main issues to be addressed in this level and also serve as a link to the theoretical analysis in the book.
Focusing on the five levels of discussion above, the book attempts to grasp the organizational characteristics of the church through its religious and social expressions and the interactive processes with the surrounding environmental factors, clarifying their basic boundaries in reality and determining the position of Christianity within the local social structure. This study argues that the local church is a mutual-benefit non-profit organization, with the operational processes of the entire organizational system exhibiting a considerable degree of introversion. Moreover, its level of formalization is relatively low. In response to the opportunities and challenges brought by social change and transformation, the church continuously improves itself, showing tendencies of quasi-bureaucratization and increasing autonomy. Behind these organizational characteristics lies the "suspended" state of Christianity within the local social structure.
Due to the differences in social and religious contexts across various regions in China, this study does not include a comparative analysis of this case with urban or other rural churches. Therefore, the conclusions of this book are not universally applicable and can at most serve as a basis for limited inference. Specifically, the representativeness of the study's conclusions lies primarily in the understanding of the future development trends of rural churches and their position within the social structure, rather than a general overview of specific organizational characteristics.
Of course, due to the uniqueness of the case, even when making these limited inferences, sufficient comparative research support is needed. However, constrained by time, effort, and limited access to support, the author can only leave this as a deficiency, hoping that it can be gradually improved in future research.
