Features: Meng Sen (1869–1938), styled Chensun, styled Xinshi, was a native of Wujin, Jiangsu. In his early years, he studied abroad in Japan, attending Tokyo Imperial University of Law and Politics. Upon returning to China, he was elected as a member of the Legislative Yuan of the Provisional Government of the Republic of China in 1913. To support parliamentary activities, he wrote political essays on current affairs; at the same time, he successively published thematic research articles on the history of the Qing Dynasty, which caused a significant impact in academia at the time. In 1929, he was appointed as a professor at the Department of History of Nanjing Central University, where he taught courses on the history of the Qing Dynasty. In 1931, he was invited as a professor and head of the Department of History at Peking University, where he taught the history of the founding of Manchuria until the July 7th Incident. Professor Meng Sen's research on the Qing Dynasty primarily focused on the examination of the origins of the Qing ancestors, the etymology of the term "Manchu," the verification of the Eight Banners system, the examination of the succession of Yongzheng, and the analysis of historical events and figures in the early Qing Dynasty. His contributions to the study of the Ming and Qing dynasties have had a profound influence on the field of history, and he is hailed by historians as the founder of the modern school of Qing Dynasty studies in China.
