Water Margin is one of the most beloved classical vernacular long novels in China. It emerged during the Ming Dynasty, created through the processing, organization, and composition of stories, tales, and plays about Water Margin since the Song and Yuan Dynasties. The entire work takes the peasant uprising led by Song Jiang as its main theme, artistically recreating the tragic and heroic portrayal of the ancient Chinese people's resistance against oppression. The work fully exposes the corruption and cruelty of the feudal ruling class, reveals the sharp social contradictions of the time, and the brutal reality of "official oppression forcing people to rebel," successfully shaping a group of heroic characters such as Lu Zhishen, Li Kui, Wu Song, Lin Chong, and Ruan Xiaogui. The novel features intricate plots, vivid language, and distinct character personalities, achieving a high level of artistic accomplishment. However, the work praises and idealizes Song Jiang, promoting "loyalty and righteousness" and "carrying out the Mandate of Heaven," reflecting severe ideological limitations.
