Features: This volume includes Chinese commercial bank notes from the Republic of China (1912–1949), joint-stock bank notes, foreign bank notes issued in China, military notes and puppet bank notes during the Japanese invasion, as well as bank notes from British-occupied Hong Kong, Portuguese-occupied Macau, and Japanese-occupied Taiwan. It also covers bank notes issued by local administrative bodies and commercial entities during the Republican era, as well as other types of notes. Military notes issued by national and local banks, as well as those from military and administrative institutions, are covered in the 9th volume of the "Great Series of Chinese Monetary History."
The "General Introduction" provides a comprehensive overview of the development, historical context, characteristics, and roles of various bank notes issued during this period, based on domestic and international research. The "Special Studies" offer in-depth, systematic introductions and analyses of important aspects or themes related to the currency of this era. In line with the principle of "freedom of thought," diverse perspectives are presented. The "Special Studies" are arranged according to the nature of their content.
The "Illustrations" of this volume include 1,936 types of bank notes. The plates are arranged in the following order: Chinese commercial bank notes, joint-stock bank notes, foreign bank notes issued in China, bank notes issued by local administrative bodies and commercial entities during the Republican era, and those listed in the appendix. The plates are printed in color at their original sizes. The descriptions below each plate include the number, collector or provider, and rating.
Bank notes are rated into five categories based on their historical significance, academic value, rarity, duration of circulation, and traditional and contemporary social evaluation. The ratings range from four stars (highest) to three stars, two stars, one star, and no stars, serving as a reference for research. Bank notes issued by local administrative bodies and commercial entities during the Republican era, as well as some others, are not rated.
The "Materials" section includes a chronology and overview tables for various bank notes. The "Index" primarily covers bank notes discussed in this volume, using the stroke order method for lookup. Entries are arranged in order of stroke complexity for the first character, with subsequent characters ordered by stroke count if the first character is the same. If the first character has the same stroke count, entries are ordered by the stroke order of the second character (horizontal, vertical, diagonal, hook, or bend).
The names of bank notes used in this volume are based on the names written on the actual notes. This volume uses both the Gregorian calendar and the Republic of China calendar. The Gregorian calendar is denoted by Arabic numerals, while the Republic of China calendar is denoted by Chinese numerals. For example, July 7, 1937 (Gregorian), is represented as the 26th year of the Republic of China, 7th month, 7th day.
