Features: Ancient Chinese novel commentary is a unique cultural phenomenon, not a singular form of literary criticism. Although commentary appeared in Chinese novel history in the guise of criticism, its actual connotations far exceed what literary criticism can encompass. In the history of Chinese novel creation, especially during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, the role of commentary far surpassed the scope of criticism, forming multiple frameworks such as critical appreciation, textual revision, and theoretical interpretation. Therefore, our research on novel commentary should also be approached from a pluralistic perspective. Specifically, we can analyze ancient novel commentary through three relationships. First, from the relationship between commentary and the history of ancient Chinese novel creation, we can reveal the value of novel commentary. Second, from the relationship between commentary and the history of the dissemination of ancient Chinese novels, we can explore the connotations of novel commentary. Third, from the relationship between commentary and the history of novel theory and criticism, we can evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of novel commentary. In the brief clarification and analysis of novel commentary above, we clearly see that novel commentary is actually a complex composite. Only by observing it from a comprehensive perspective can we better approach its original state and accurately assess its value.
