Features: The classics are profound and deep, and the historical records are intricate and elegant. Yet without the effort of exploration and research, how can one fully comprehend them and then discuss them with others? Therefore, the journey from erudition to steadfast action is filled with countless practices. Now, I see a book titled Shuo Tang in the library collection, starting from the Five Dynasties period and ending with the prosperous Tang Dynasty. It covers the principles of governance and chaos, the complexities of rise and fall, the distinction between loyalty and treachery, and the extraordinary strategies of generals and ministers. Both virtue and vice are present, beauty and ugliness are not concealed. The language is straightforward, and the matters are arranged logically, making readers feel like they are watching a blazing fire, listeners as if hearing sounds, and speakers as if pouring from a gourd. It can inspire a desire for goodness, restrain evil thoughts, and is a highly beneficial book for society. It can be entrusted to the engravers.
Shuo Tang has a strong folk literary character, with many stories being collectively created by folk storytellers. Most of its content has no historical basis, and some characters are purely fictional. Some real figures and events have been arbitrarily adapted. These characteristics of Shuo Tang have long been despised and mocked by scholars and literati, who dismiss it as "rough, vulgar, and truly insignificant." In stark contrast, the common people highly appreciate Shuo Tang and are delighted to hear about the heroic deeds of the "Eighteen Heroes of Sui and Tang" in the book. Shuo Tang has a strong storytelling style, with its language being elegant, profound, and full of unrestrained folk vernacular. For example, the language of Cheng Yaojin is sometimes vulgar and crude, yet it is deeply loved by the common people.
