Author: (Austrian) Freud, translated by Yang Dongxiong
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2004-11-01
Features: The original title of this book is "Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality," which, following "The Interpretation of Dreams," became another work of immense global influence by Freud. It was the first to apply psychoanalytic methods to the study of specific psychological issues. Scientific, comprehensive, rational, and profound. Preface to the Fifth Edition Over the past decade, I have been observing the impact and recognition this book has received from readers. On the occasion of the reissue of the third edition, I would like to write a short preface to clarify some misunderstandings and explain some of my unfulfilled wishes. I must clarify that the views presented in this book are entirely based on everyday medical observations, and the findings of psychoanalytic research enhance its scientific validity. "On Sexuality" can only contain what is necessary for psychoanalytic purposes; therefore, it cannot be extended into an all-encompassing "theory of sexuality," and it is natural that many important aspects of life are not fully addressed. However, readers should understand that the author is not entirely unaware of these issues or considers them unimportant. To clarify, the book's selection of topics and the arrangement of its material are all based on psychoanalytic observations. Because the importance of various factors differs, the order of presentation also varies. Take constitutional factors as an example—there is a greater emphasis on accidental factors, which I believe are more important than racial or individual characteristics. Accidental factors play a significant role in the analysis: the analysis is almost entirely influenced by accidental factors. Constitutional factors, on the other hand, are secondary because they only become apparent through experience. Of course, non-psychoanalytic perspectives are also taken into account. The relationship between racial and individual characteristics is similar. It should be said that individual characteristics are a reflection of racial characteristics. However, racial characteristics do not change due to the influence of recent experience, and they play a significant role behind individual development. Individual characteristics are the result of accumulated early human experience, combined with recent experiences, forming the sum of accidental factors. It must be emphasized that while the book strives to minimize the influence of biology, it is based on psychoanalytic research. I have carefully avoided the views of many experts in the past, whether from general sexual biology or specialized studies on a particular species. The book, while minimizing the influence of biology, is based on psychoanalytic research. The views it presents are entirely based on everyday medical observations, with the findings of psychoanalytic research enhancing its scientific validity. My purpose is to explore to what extent psychological research can enrich our biological knowledge of human sexuality.
