Features: For most Chinese people, their understanding of the South Korean military is primarily limited to its long-standing hostile relationship with North Korea, its substantial military force, and the presence of U.S. troops on its soil. However, how strong this military force is, its organizational structure, equipment status, the wars it has participated in, and the nature of the military relationship between the U.S. and South Korea—these aspects are likely known and cared about by relatively few, and there is scarce information available about them. This is mainly because the South Korean military has long maintained strict confidentiality measures, resulting in low transparency. Currently, reports on the South Korean military in China are mostly focused on adjustments in its military strategy and the development of its weaponry, while introductions to its systemic aspects remain limited, making it difficult for people to gain a comprehensive understanding of the South Korean military. This book aims to address this gap, providing readers with a comprehensive window into the South Korean military. The book references a large number of publications and detailed materials on the South Korean military, many of which are firsthand revelations of photographs and illustrations from on-the-ground interviews. It represents a rare attempt in China to present a full picture of the South Korean military's history, current status, and future development. The book is generally divided into several major sections: South Korean Defense, the Combat Readiness Systems and Weaponry of the South Korean Armed Forces, the South Korean Defense Industry System, U.S. Troops in South Korea, and the History of the South Korean Military's Involvement in Wars.
The South Korean Defense section primarily introduces South Korea's strategic position, the defense system of the South Korean military, the history of its military development, and the relationship between the military and politics. The Combat Readiness Systems and Weaponry of the South Korean Armed Forces section mainly covers the strength, command systems, combat capabilities, performance of weaponry, and development trends of South Korea's land, sea, and air forces. It also provides detailed comparative analyses with the armed forces of neighboring countries to help readers better understand the true strength of the South Korean military. The South Korean Defense Industry System section introduces the organization, management, key research and production units, production capacity, and development trends of South Korea's defense industry. The U.S. Troops in South Korea section primarily covers the composition, weaponry, combat capabilities, operational philosophy, and history of U.S. troops stationed in South Korea, along with a thorough analysis of the current strategic adjustments being prepared by the U.S. forces. The History of the South Korean Military's Involvement in Wars section introduces the wars the South Korean military has participated in since its establishment, including the well-known role of the South Korean military in the Korean War and the lesser-known participation of the South Korean military in the Vietnam War. In the chapter "The South Korean Military in the Korean War," the author focuses on analyzing the actual performance of the South Korean military during the war and some underlying reasons. In the chapter "The Journey of the South Korean Military in the Vietnam War," the background, forces involved, and actual combat performance of the South Korean military are introduced, revealing for the first time the full process of the South Korean military's participation in the Vietnam War.
