Features: Bringing together one's works for collective publication—I believe this is the aspiration of any writer. When such a series of works appears on a bookshelf, the writer feels that his writing and imagination begin to unify and take shape, becoming clear at a glance. I am grateful to Shanghai Literature and Art Publishing House and Mr. Jia Shi Pei for helping me realize this aspiration, making the "Yu Hua Works Series" possible. Now, all my literary treasures are with Shanghai Literature and Art Publishing House, and my new creations will also be added there gradually. What I mean is that this is an open-ended series of works, including all my past writings and all my future creations. These short stories and novellas document another path of my life. Unlike the real path of life, it has the possibility of beinged, and it is accurate and unerring. Although the passage of time may yellow the paper and blur the ink, each new publication brings it back to life, restoring its vividness. This is why I love writing so much. No path in the world is repeated, and no life can be replaced. Everyone is experiencing life that is uniquely their own. The richness of the world and the narrowness of personal space make reading come to the fore. Reading opens our personal windows, making us aware of the vastness of the sky and the breadth of the earth, transforming our singular lives into plural ones. We feel that our lives are enriched, and our imagination expands. These stories unrelated to us will continuously awaken our memories, bringing back forgotten experiences and recollections, and refreshing them.
