The Collected Works of the Two Chengs (Volume 1 and 2)

Author: (Song) Cheng Hao
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2004-02-01
Features: This book is a collection of all the works of Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi. It includes six types: Yishu (Remains), Waiшу (External Books), Wenji (Collected Poems and Prose), Yituan (Commentary on the Book of Changes), Jingshuo (Commentary on Classics), and Cuiyan (Essentials). Among these, most of the works are by Cheng Yi. Yishu consists of recorded dialogues of the Two Chengs by their disciples, later compiled and edited by Zhu Xi. Waiшу is a supplementary or continuation to Yishu, hence the name "External Books." According to Zhu Xi, it is called so because the sources of the material are relatively mixed and their reliability is poorer. Wenji includes the poems and miscellaneous writings of the Two Chengs. Jingshuo contains the interpretations and elaborations of the Two Chengs on certain Confucian classics. The first four types were all published separately in the Song Dynasty and were sometimes compiled together, referred to as the "Four Books of the Cheng Family."
