Features: The handsome but cold-hearted boy Karl is already 17 years old. He announces to his adoptive parents that he wants to find his biological parents. Subsequently, Karl embarks on an emotional search accompanied by a female journalist. The archival institutions and scientific facilities of contemporary society provide Karl with a wealth of information, but the mysterious numbers and symbols still leave him unable to know who his biological parents really are. Karl is plunged into a shock and confusion he has never experienced before. He keeps calling for his mother and searching for his identity. In the end, all the search evidence leads him to a strange and cold machine. The fetus developing inside the machine reveals his origins, and he is so terrified that he cannot control himself, then disappears into the dark night, leaving no trace behind. This book was published in 1989 and has been reprinted multiple times. It won the German Excellence in Young Literature Award in 1990 and was adapted into a film that became a sensation in Europe and America.
