Features: Love is the eternal theme of literature. In the long history of Chinese fiction, love stories have never ceased to appear. By the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty, a large number of vernacular chapter novels depicting the love and marriage stories of young men and women emerged, forming a unique and highly influential literary genre known as the "talented scholar and beautiful lady" novels. The Jade Pearls (Yu Jiao Li) is a representative work of this genre. The Jade Pearls is one of the earliest talented scholar and beautiful lady novels from the early Qing Dynasty. It features an original and elegant plot, a fresh and refined writing style, and is a work of a truly pure talented scholar and beautiful lady novel, setting an example and establishing a precedent. The novel portrays the positive themes of advocating for marital autonomy and daring to pursue ideal love and marriage. At the same time, it highly praises the beauty and passion of women, highlights their talent and courage, and to some extent challenges the feudal notion that "women are virtuous only if they lack talent," shaking the traditional patriarchal consciousness. The novel was published multiple times and became a bestseller across the country. Its influence also extended overseas, reaching as far as distant Europe. By 1821 (the first year of the Daoguang reign in the Qing Dynasty), it had been translated into French, followed by English and German translations. The great German philosopher Hegel also mentioned The Jade Pearls in his Philosophy of History, demonstrating its significant impact.
