Features: College English is a comprehensive practical course textbook designed for English majors at higher education institutions. It helps improve students' listening, speaking, reading, writing, and self-learning abilities. After studying this textbook, combined with targeted training in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, students should possess the following skills upon entering higher grades:
1. Ability to read general English and reference books in English.
2. Ability to understand knowledge-based courses taught in English.
3. Ability to participate in classroom discussions in English with basic linguistic accuracy.
4. Ability to write book reports in English with basic linguistic accuracy.
College English is divided into four volumes. With six class hours per week, it can be completed within two years. Volume 1 contains fifteen lessons, Volume 2 contains eleven lessons, and Volumes 3 and 4 each contain fifteen lessons. Shorter texts are taught one per week, while longer texts may be adjusted by the instructor. Each lesson includes a text, notes, and exercises. Volumes 1 and 2 also feature vocabulary lists and supplementary readings, as follows:
Texts: To expose students to authentic English from the beginning, all texts are original works by British and American authors. Only minor revisions are made in a few texts for pedagogical purposes. In terms of selection, we have strived to ensure diversity, informativeness, and in the content.
Vocabulary Lists: Considering that students need time to adapt to university-level learning requirements, we provide vocabulary lists with Chinese definitions at the end of each lesson in Volume 1. In Volume 2, vocabulary lists exclude commonly accessible words. After completing Volumes 1 and 2, students should develop a certain level of self-learning ability, so Volumes 3 and 4 do not include vocabulary lists.
Notes: These include author biographies, background information, grammar, and language issues that are not easily found in general reference books. Except for the notes in Volume 1, all notes in Volumes 2–4 are in English.
Exercises: In Volumes 1 and 2, some texts are longer, and exercises are correspondingly increased, with some divided into Groups A and B. Instructors may choose to teach part of the text and assign part of the exercises. Overall, the book offers a variety of exercise types and a substantial workload, allowing teachers to select as needed or supplement based on students' requirements.
Supplementary Readings: To enhance students' intuitive understanding of language and expand their vocabulary, Volumes 1 and 2 include supplementary reading materials for each lesson. We provide notes but no vocabulary lists, gradually cultivating students' ability to use dictionaries.
