Features: This book collects members of national and provincial calligraphy associations who excel in seal carving, as well as seal carvers who passed away since the founding of the People's Republic of China. It is organized by provinces and cities, providing detailed introductions to each inductee's name, style name, courtesy name, studio name, birth date, birthplace, artistic background, mentors, specialized skills, and achievements. Each entry includes a photograph and a representative work, all printed in red. The Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese Seal Carvers is a reference work compiled after The Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese Calligraphers and The Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese Painters. It is both complementary to the two aforementioned dictionaries and a standalone volume. The subjects of this dictionary mainly include: members of the Chinese Calligraphers Association who excel in seal carving, chairpersons and members of provincial, municipal, and autonomous regional calligraphy associations, highly renowned seal carvers who passed away after 1949, outstanding members of provincial, municipal, and autonomous regional calligraphy associations, as well as members of various seal clubs at all levels. Inductees from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau are determined on a case-by-case basis, without restrictions on their participation in artistic organizations. The dictionary is organized by provinces, cities, and autonomous regions, arranged in order of stroke count based on simplified characters. In addition to introducing each inductee's name, style name, courtesy name, studio name, birth date, birthplace, artistic background, mentors, specialized skills, and achievements, it also publishes their portrait and a representative work, aiming to create a three-dimensional image of the inductees. Considering the professionalism and academic nature of this dictionary, it primarily focuses on the artistic careers and achievements of the inductees, while other aspects are generally not elaborated in detail. The artistic achievements and participation in artistic organizations of the inductees are based on the information available at the time of compilation. Some inductees hold multiple positions, but due to space limitations, only the most important ones are listed. In evaluating the artistic characteristics and styles of the inductees, efforts have been made to be objective, accurate, and appropriate, avoiding both overly high praise and vague individuality. However, despite extensive efforts, some inaccuracies may still exist. Moreover, many authors are continuously improving, and future developments are unpredictable. Therefore, the evaluations in this dictionary should be considered as references rather than definitive conclusions. The entries in this dictionary are compiled based on materials provided by the inductees themselves or published in relevant books and periodicals, ensuring a high degree of reliability. The number of inductees varies across provinces, cities, and autonomous regions. This is partly due to insufficient understanding of certain regions and incomplete solicitation of contributions. Additionally, some eligible seal carvers could not be contacted for information, and their entries are temporarily omitted. Some photographs of inductees are missing due to insufficient exposure or blurriness, which does not meet printing requirements. However, due to various reasons, it is currently impossible to supplement them, so they are temporarily left incomplete. All omissions will be addressed in future editions or supplements. The compilation of this dictionary was completed in December 1995.
