Features: This series of books aims to improve students' English proficiency while also helping them gain a deeper understanding of Western and Eastern social and cultural backgrounds. Professor Xu Guozhang also considered that the current level of learners has generally improved, so the selected articles are of a high starting point and difficulty. To facilitate the use of this textbook by a wide range of learners and teaching assistants, we have compiled this study and teaching guide. The format of this book is as follows:
1. Background and Guidance: We provide concise explanations of some background information in the text and add a guide for the second volume, such as the details of the Tehran Conference or which are the Seven Wonders, presenting the key points of each article in a few brief sentences.
2. Supplementary Vocabulary and Phrases: To accommodate learners of different levels, we have added some additional vocabulary and phrases based on the original book.
3. Text Explanation: We provide detailed analysis, explanations, and annotations for idiomatic expressions, proverbs, and difficult points in the text, as well as key sentence patterns. Most difficult sentences are accompanied by both Chinese and English translations, and some key phrases include example sentences.
4. Exercises and Answers: We have supplemented exercises for the first volume and created exercises for the second volume, all centered around the text content. These exercises are designed to assess learners' progress from various perspectives, aligned with the requirements of the Higher Education Self-Study Examination. Completing the exercises diligently after studying a text will help learners master its key points and content. In addition to providing answers for the original book's exercises, we have also provided answers for the newly created exercises.
5. Sample Tests: We have provided mid-term and final exams for each volume, totaling four sets. All sample tests include reference answers.
