Features: Continues where the Zizhi Tongjian left off, starting from Emperor Taizu of Song's Jianlong Year 1 (960 AD) and ending with Emperor Shun of Yuan's Zhizheng Year 28 (1368 AD), covering 411 years. It is a relatively comprehensive chronicle history of the Song, Liao, Jin, and Yuan dynasties. The book is rich in historical materials and follows the style of the Zizhi Tongjian, with annotations and textual criticism appended to the main text. The compiler based his work on Xu Qianxue's Post-Zizhi Tongjian and drew from over 100 other sources, including the Four Histories of Song, Liao, Jin, and Yuan, the Chunqiu Zhi Biao (Extended Chronicle of the Zizhi Tongjian), and the Yilai Xiniannian Yaolu (Essential Annals of the Jianyan Era). It underwent four revisions over 20 years. The book is rich in historical materials and follows the style of the Zizhi Tongjian, with annotations and textual criticism appended to the main text. The Northern Song section is more detailed, while the Yuan section is relatively brief.
Bi Yuan (1730–1797), from Zhenyang in Jiangnan during the Qing Dynasty, styled Xiangheng and known as Qiutui, served as the Governor-General of Hubei. He was versed in Confucian classics, history, paleography, and epigraphy. He believed that "the meaning of classics should follow the Han scholars, the Shuowen Jiezi should follow Xu Shen, and the chronological history should follow Su Shi (Master of Susu)." He enjoyed associating with scholars and was later joined by renowned scholars such as Qian Daixin, Shao Jinhán, Zhang Xuecheng, and Hong Liangjí in his entourage.
