Features: The Southern History consists of eighty volumes, and the Northern History consists of one hundred volumes, both written by Li Yanshou of the Tang Dynasty. The Southern History begins in the year 420 AD (the first year of Yongchu in the reign of Emperor Wu of the Southern Song Dynasty) and ends in the year 589 AD (the third year of Zhengming in the reign of Emperor Hou of the Chen Dynasty), recording the history of four feudal dynasties in the Southern Dynasty—Southern Song, Southern Qi, Liang, and Chen—spanning a total of 170 years. The Northern History begins in the year 386 AD (the first year of Dengguo in the reign of Emperor Wu of the Northern Wei Dynasty) and ends in the year 617 AD (the second year of Yining in the reign of Emperor Gong of the Sui Dynasty), recording the history of four feudal dynasties in the Northern Dynasty—Northern Wei, Northern Qi (including Eastern Wei), Zhou (including Western Wei), and Sui—spanning a total of 233 years. The two books are collectively known as the Northern and Southern Histories.
