Selected Works of Owen (Volume 3) Ping (Chinese Translation of Famous Works)

Author: Jiao Jia, Wu Yixuan, Huang Weixin
Publisher:
Publication Date: 2001-08-01
Features: The "Autobiography" included in this volume was originally titled "The Life and Works of Robert Owen: A Selection of Autobiographical Narratives and Correspondence." This volume narrates Owen's experiences from childhood to 1821 and is an important document for studying his theories, life, and character. Owen completed and published the first volume of his "Autobiography" in 1857 but died in 1858 before he could write the second volume. In the "Preface" to his "Autobiography," Owen explains why he was reluctant to write his autobiography but ultimately decided to narrate his life. He repeatedly elaborates on his new social vision and his utopian plan for peacefully transforming the old society and establishing a new society for the benefit of all. Owen also wrote a "Foreword" for the "Autobiography." Since the "Foreword" repeats the arguments of the "Preface," the Chinese translation omits the "Foreword" and makes some to the "Preface," while the main text of the "Autobiography" is translated in full. The "Preface" in this volume was translated by Wu Yixuan. The first 30,000 words of the main text were translated by Huang Weixin. Ma Qinghuai translated the remaining part of the main text and proofread the translations by Wu Yixuan and Huang Weixin. Wu Yixuan also proofread the translation by Ma Qinghuai.
