Features: The first to fourth volumes of "Comprehensive English Course" have been published for over three years. During this period, nearly 100 comprehensive universities and normal universities across nearly 30 provinces and cities in the country have adopted them as the main teaching materials for the basic stage of English majors. Over three years of practice have shown that the textbook has basically achieved the original intention of the compilers, providing students in the basic stage of English majors with comprehensive training in language communicative competence. Teachers and students who participated in the trial use of our textbooks have put forward many valuable suggestions. Their care and support are the foundation of our success and also a on our compilers, urging us to further explore new ideas and methods for intermediate and advanced English teaching. Since the publication of the fourth volume of "Comprehensive English Course," we have been thinking about what English majors need after completing the first to fourth volumes. What methods can intermediate and advanced students use to consolidate and continue to improve their language communicative competence? We found that most students who have finished the first to fourth volumes of the textbook have already achieved a considerable level in English listening, speaking, reading, and writing. They are no longer satisfied with the teaching method that revolves around a single text all day, and they urgently hope to soar freely in a broader world. Therefore, how to create a training environment that can both cultivate language skills and develop critical thinking skills for these students is an urgent issue facing the compilers. To this end, we spent nearly two years studying the theories and practices of foreign language teaching at home and abroad in China and the United States, analyzing the characteristics of our students, and drawing preliminary conclusions. The fifth and sixth volumes of "Comprehensive English Course" are the concrete embodiment of this research result.
