Features: Paul Delvaux (1897.9–1994) was a Belgian surrealist painter of the second generation. He spent most of his life in Brussels. Before World War II, he was influenced by the 16th-century Italian Mannerist painting style. Additionally, he had painted some classical architecture in his early years, which later helped him develop a unique expressive style in surrealism. Around 1935, he joined the surrealist movement. Initially, he was influenced by the Spanish painter Salvador Dalí, but later he fully embraced the dreamlike visions of the Italian painter Giorgio de Chirico. Moreover, the Belgian artist René Magritte was also one of his revered painters. The themes he painted throughout his life always revolved around two key elements: first, the perspective representation since the Renaissance; second, depicting subjects against the backdrop of Victorian-style classical architecture, placing them in unimaginable times, places, and spaces, leaving viewers with a subtle sense of fantasy.
