Features: Egon Schiele, born in Tulln, Austria, and died in Vienna. At the age of 16, Schiele entered the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and studied under Klimt, meeting Kokoschka. His early works were influenced by academic and impressionist styles, laying a solid foundation in figurative art. After meeting Klimt and Kokoschka, his works exhibited a distinct decorative style, showing a strong influence from the Art Nouveau movement—specifically, the Jugendstil and Arabic patterns. While Klimt's art evolved from symbolism to expressionism, Schiele delved into pure expressionism. Later in his career, Schiele's art was influenced not only by Swiss artist H?lderlin but also directly inspired by Nietzsche and Freud's psychology. He unflinchingly depicted the psychological and emotional state of people in his time. The figures and landscapes he painted were never static; regardless of their form, they appeared in a state of panic and unease. The intertwining of the desire for life and the threat of death cast a terrifying shadow over his works. The figures in his paintings were slender and elongated, with sharp, rigid lines that sent shivers down the viewer's spine. He emphasized clear outlines in his figures and often used red, yellow, and black to convey intense emotions. Beyond exaggerating facial expressions and movements, he focused on portraying the neurotic emotions of his subjects. To capture the tense and restless states of his figures, he even visited mental asylums to study the expressions and actions of patients, depicting a form of silent, moving gestures that were deeply moving. During World War I, he was drafted into the Austrian Army but continued to paint, achieving both productivity and high quality. His artistic style was unique within the expressionist movement. This book, edited in Austria, features 97 oil and watercolor works by the renowned Austrian expressionist painter Egon Schiele. The preface provides a detailed introduction to Schiele's life, artistic characteristics, and painting philosophy, which will enrich and drive the diverse trends in contemporary art.
