Patient's question:
A child has had Down syndrome for a while, but they are still undergoing treatment. Could you please tell me what are the special characteristics of people with Down syndrome?Doctor's answer:
Children with Down syndrome have many obvious physical and physiological symptoms. They have lower intelligence than normal children, usually with an IQ of only 40 to 60, but they are gentle in temperament. Children with this condition develop slowly, and due to low muscle tone, they take longer to learn to sit, stand, and walk than normal children. They also have very distinctive facial features, making them easier to identify. Children with Down syndrome typically have wider-set eyes, upward slanting eyes, a flat nasal bridge, and small mouths, teeth, and ears. Most patients have simian creases on their palms (also known as transverse palmar creases), and their fingers have a special horse-shoe-shaped pattern. The distance between the second and third toes is unusually wide.
