Features: Since its introduction in 1986, the "College English" series textbooks have been revised several times to adapt to changes in teaching trends. The official version was published in 1992, and it was revised again in 1998. This series of textbooks has been used for 20 years and has been widely welcomed by institutions of higher learning. It has also won national awards on multiple occasions. Its vitality lies in keeping pace with the times, continuously updating, and improving. This book is the Reading Coursebook for the "College English" series textbooks (3rd Edition). This revision was carried out in accordance with the "Teaching Requirements for College English Courses (Trial)" issued by the Ministry of Education in 2004, combined with the current situation of college English teaching in China. Therefore, the direction of our revision is: while improving reading skills, we must also focus on cultivating students' comprehensive application of English. This revision does not change the original format of the book, which remains ten units per volume, with three texts per unit. Due to different course arrangements in various institutions and varying reading abilities among students across regions, institutions can selectively use this textbook based on specific circumstances. In the arrangement, each unit's content is designed to be more engaging, and it is recommended to pay special attention to it when using the book. After each text, there are two types of exercises: one is reading exercises, and the other is vocabulary application exercises. The vocabulary application exercises are designed to be diverse and innovative, such as summaries of the usage of polysemous words, the flexible use and collocations of small words, distinctions between homonymous words, and word derivation. These exercises not only help in summarizing learned knowledge but also enhance students' adaptability and responsiveness. Reading exercises are mandatory, while vocabulary exercises can be done entirely or selectively based on individual needs and abilities. To enhance learning interest, a self-assessment exercise is added after every fifteen lessons, along with supplementary reading passages for leisure. Students can use these to check their improvement in reading skills. (Answers to English-Chinese translation and vocabulary exercises are provided in the "Teacher's Book.")
