The protagonist of this fairy tale is a 14-year-old boy from a rural area in southern Sweden. His parents are kind, hardworking, and very poor farmers, but Nils is rough and very naughty, with no interest in reading and a fondness for mischief and bullying small animals. One early spring, his parents went to church, and at home, he was turned into a tiny-sized by a small elf after teasing it. Just then, a flock of wild geese flew overhead, and a male goose in his house also wanted to take flight and follow them. To prevent the goose from flying away, Nils tightly hugged its neck, but unexpectedly, he was carried up into the sky by the goose. From then on, he rode on the goose's back, traveling with the wild geese to all parts of the world, all the way to the northern Lapland province.
