Features: The construction of the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), China's highest-level performing arts venue, has undergone nearly four decades of deliberation and planning since the 1950s. In 1997, the Chinese government decided to invest in the construction of the NCPA on the west side of Tiananmen Square, near the Great Hall of the People, and established the National Centre for the Performing Arts Project Owners Committee to oversee the project. Under the leadership of the NCPA Construction Leadership Group, the committee worked to ensure the project would become an internationally renowned artistic. To achieve this goal, the Chinese government decided to widely solicit design proposals both domestically and internationally. For this purpose, the National Centre for the Performing Arts Project Owners Committee invited several renowned design firms from both China and abroad to participate in the design competition.
