"Comprehensive Course" consists of four volumes, written as a foundational English course textbook for first and second-year English majors in higher education institutions. It aims to comprehensively improve students' abilities in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation. This textbook was co-authored by Shanghai International Studies University, Fudan University, East China Normal University, and Shanghai Normal University. Most of the texts in this textbook are original works by British and American authors, with only minor and changes made in some cases. In addition to some classic articles, most of the texts are selected from original foreign textbooks, periodicals, magazines, and reading materials published since the 1970s. The types of texts include narratives, expository texts, argumentative essays, and descriptive writings.
