Features: An Introduction to English Listening was originally a teaching material for the English listening course of the Foreign Language Department at East China Normal University. After a period of practical use, it has been published in parts and is now available for trial use in English departments of higher education institutions and other relevant organizations. The entire series consists of four volumes, serving as the basic teaching content for a four-semester (approximately 160 class hours) listening course. Each volume includes eight 60-minute cassette tapes of intensive listening materials, a student's book, and a teacher's book. The intensive listening materials and the student's book are the core of the, and both must be used together. Students who complete the four volumes of and fulfill all the exercise tasks should basically meet the requirements and standards for listening set forth in the basic teaching syllabus for English majors at Chinese universities, while also being able to pass the listening tests designed for intermediate English learners in English-speaking countries.
The third volume is fundamentally the same as the first two in terms of its guiding principles for compilation, selection criteria, and organizational format. The focus remains on strengthening listening skill training, improving students' ability to comprehend various types of authentic listening materials, expanding their knowledge, and developing their intelligence. To help students transition more naturally from the elementary stage of English listening proficiency to the intermediate stage, the material length gradually increases in this volume, and the topics shift from more concrete daily conversations to more abstract thematic introductions, discussions, and reports. The speaking speed in the recording materials also progressively accelerates.
In the exercises, while retaining some of the practice forms from the first two volumes to continue cultivating students' ability to identify and select key information from the listening materials, more exercises involving note-taking, summarizing, and outlining are incorporated to develop students' judgment and organizational skills.
