Features: English is a universal language in international communication. With the increasing frequency of foreign exchanges, the demands on the listening and speaking abilities of English learners have become ever higher. How to effectively improve students' listening and speaking skills and change the unsatisfactory teaching outcomes such as "only reading English" and "deaf-mute English" have become urgent issues in current English teaching. In recent years, the author has achieved significant results in improving students' listening and speaking skills through teaching practices involving eight classes of sophomores and juniors at Dalian University (non-English majors) by offering college English speaking and listening courses and English speaking tutorials. This book is a polished and enriched teaching material, dedicated to readers. It can be used as a college English speaking textbook, for oral training in various classes, or as a self-study book or reference manual for English enthusiasts. The book has the following features in its content arrangement:
1. Dedicated units introduce phonetic knowledge. The phonetic knowledge and training mainly focus on sentence stress, rhythm, and intonation, which are key phonetic elements for mastering spoken English. Additionally, Unit 25 introduces habitual expressions for each stage of a conversation to help readers learn various ways to engage in smooth conversations with foreigners.
2. Starting from Unit 2, each unit begins with "Hints." This section mainly introduces the linguistic and sociocultural background related to the unit topic, as well as issues to pay attention to in language communication.
3. "Practical Expressions" form the core of the book. Given the diverse scenarios in spoken English, the book strives to include various expressions relevant to each scenario.
4. The book emphasizes practical speaking exercises. In addition to listing several "Practical Expressions" in each unit, it provides numerous substitution exercises to expand readers' vocabulary and add fun to the practice.
5. The "Practical Expressions" and "Dialogue Exercises" in each unit are accompanied by corresponding reference translations. The author hopes that this English-Chinese parallel presentation will help readers accurately understand and apply English.
