Features: New Interchange, published by Cambridge University Press, is one of the most popular and influential English textbooks in the world. It incorporates eight years of global classroom teaching experience and has been extensively improved based on feedback from students and teachers. The major revisions include: new conversation exercises, cultural snapshots, reading passages, more comprehensive grammar explanations and activities, and richer listening materials. The teacher's book, workbook, and video content have also been significantly updated.
New Interchange is a large-scale English course designed for learners in non-English-speaking countries. It covers the four core skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, while also providing pronunciation training and vocabulary expansion. It places particular emphasis on developing listening and speaking skills. The primary goal of this course is to cultivate English communicative competence—flexibly using English based on the context, purpose, and audience of communication. The course primarily uses American English, but its content is not limited to any single country, region, or culture. Instead, it reflects the richness and diversity of English as a global lingua franca.
The course is divided into four levels: Introductory, Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3.
- Introductory Level: Designed for "true" beginners with no prior English knowledge, it covers basic grammar structures, vocabulary, and language functions.
- Level 1: Aimed at learners with a basic English level, it further develops grammar, vocabulary, and pragmatic skills, enabling students to reach a low-intermediate level.
- Level 2: For learners with a low-intermediate level, it continues to enhance grammar, vocabulary, and pragmatic skills, preparing students for an intermediate level.
- Level 3: For learners with an intermediate level, it focuses on developing the ability to communicate in relatively fluent and accurate English.
Through a variety of thought-provoking and challenging exercises, the course helps students further strengthen and develop their communicative abilities in English. In addition to applied skills practice, the textbook also includes advanced discourse comprehension exercises. Listening activities include: listening to narratives, advertisements, discussions, and interviews. Reading activities feature authentic passages on topics such as cross-cultural communication, lifestyles, and different values.
Upon completing all four levels, learners will reach a mid-high intermediate level.
