Features: The Modern Vietnamese-Chinese Dictionary is a newly compiled and published medium-sized Vietnamese-Chinese dictionary by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. This dictionary contains over 50,000 entries, including most commonly used Vietnamese vocabulary, and strives to include new words, terms, and updated definitions from various fields such as society, politics, economy, foreign trade, law, science and technology, and cultural life in recent years. It also includes some loanwords. To save space, the selection of words avoids including those Chinese-Vietnamese terms that can be "figured out" from their literal meanings. Instead, a Chinese-Vietnamese pronunciation table is provided in the appendix, allowing the dictionary to accommodate the largest vocabulary in the smallest possible space. Additionally, except for words with special usage or typical meanings, we generally avoid using example words and rarely list example sentences to highlight the compact yet comprehensive nature of medium-sized dictionaries.
When compiling this dictionary, the primary reference was The Vietnamese Dictionary, edited by the renowned Vietnamese linguist Mr. Huang Pi and published by the Hanoi Social Sciences Publishing House in 1988, with revisions in 1992 and 1994. This is one of the largest Vietnamese explanatory dictionaries in Vietnam. It contains nearly 40,000 entries and is currently the newest and highest-quality Vietnamese dictionary, reflecting the latest achievements in Vietnamese language research, especially in lexicography. We adopted some of its compilation methods and principles, while also retaining certain traditional dictionary layout features to suit the needs of Chinese readers and Vietnamese teaching practices. Notably, we referenced The Vietnamese-Chinese Dictionary published by the Commercial Press in 1960, ensuring that this dictionary offers scientifically organized, highly practical, up-to-date content, a large vocabulary, accurate definitions, and user-friendly features.
