Features: Learning English requires mastering a certain number of basic vocabulary to smoothly progress in reading and communication. To help, especially middle school students, learn English vocabulary effectively and improve their English communication skills, we have meticulously designed and compiled this compact English learning dictionary. The design philosophy of this dictionary is: select words carefully, provide detailed definitions, include numerous example sentences, and clarify usage. The specific approach is as follows:
1. Fully include the 1,800 words and related phrases required by the "Full-time Secondary School English Teaching Syllabus" and the "National Unified Examination for Higher Education Admission" issued by the Ministry of Education, and appropriately supplement them by referring to foreign basic English teaching dictionaries. The dictionary contains a total of 3,754 words and 1,109 phrases to better meet students' in-class learning and extracurricular reading comprehension needs.
2. Provide careful explanations of the basic meanings of words and introduce some other common meanings appropriately to help students more comprehensively grasp the meanings of relevant vocabulary, thereby facilitating the understanding of the same word in different contexts and reducing the situation where students recognize words but fail to understand their meanings.
3. Provide numerous typical and practical example sentences to help deepen word meaning comprehension, understand structural features, and simultaneously allow students to learn more ready-made expressions, which is beneficial for direct English communication. We pay particular attention to including some daily expressions to address certain shortcomings of textbooks.
4. Provide detailed explanations of word usage in the {Usage Notes} section, including word forms, collocations, grammar, etc., to help students use words and construct sentences correctly, overcome common usage errors among Chinese students, and improve their vocabulary application skills.
In summary, our goal is "based on the syllabus but exceeding it." By using this dictionary, students can not only master what the syllabus requires but also achieve further improvement, meeting current practical needs while adapting to future development requirements. This will effectively enhance English communication skills and lay a solid foundation.
