Features: College English for Experience is a national-level planning textbook for general higher education under the "Five-Year Plan," featuring up-to-date and practical content. It was jointly developed by scholars from several renowned universities in China, following the requirements of the Teaching Syllabus for College English (Revised Edition) and incorporating new teaching philosophies. To meet the needs of teaching and learning, experienced teachers from universities such as Shanghai International Studies University have collaborated to create this supplementary textbook for College English for Experience. This book is a new masterpiece from Huayuan Foreign Language, fully faithful to the original textbook, with comprehensive content and detailed explanations, dedicated to helping students improve their English proficiency and master various learning skills. The structure and features of each unit in this supplementary textbook are as follows:
1. Cultural Links
This section introduces the main concepts, terminology, writing background, and relevant figures of the two texts in each unit, helping readers enrich their extracurricular knowledge while deeply understanding the texts. It also makes reading more engaging.
2. Close Reading of Texts
This is the core of the supplementary textbook, divided into three parts:
a. Listen and Talk
This section focuses on application and communication skills, greatly benefiting readers in improving their listening and speaking abilities.
b. Read and Explore
This is particularly important and includes the following aspects:
1) Text Summary (Chinese-English): Provides an overall understanding of the text content.
2) Text Structure Analysis (Chinese-English): Clarifies the overall structure of the text.
3) Writing Features
Introduces the genre, writing style, and thought process of each text, helping readers better grasp the author's ideas and teaching them how to write clear, coherent, and thought-provoking articles.
4) Syllabus Vocabulary and Phrases
Details part of speech, meaning, synonyms, antonyms, example sentences, word formation, derivatives, easily confused words (homophones), and key points (collocations, distinctions, notes), helping students solidly master and flexibly use core vocabulary and phrases. Since College English for Experience is designed for non-English majors, the vocabulary in this supplementary textbook is selected according to the Vocabulary List for the Teaching Syllabus for College English, compiled by the Ministry of Education and the Advisory Committee on College Foreign Language Teaching, published by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press and Higher Education Press.
5) Complex Sentence Analysis
Translates and explains sentences with complex structures or special meanings (original sentences marked with Line X, Para. X), interpreting key vocabulary and phrases to help students fully and correctly understand the essence of the text.
6) Reference Translations
Translated in accordance with the principles of "faithfulness, expressiveness, and elegance," with fluent writing and distinctive wording.
7) Exercise Answers and Explanations
Provides answers to each question, along with translations. Detailed explanations are given for some questions, and solving techniques are explained.
c. Write and Produce
Various writing exercises are included to help improve readers' writing skills.
3. Mock Exam Practice
This is a distinctive feature of the book, designed to allow readers to test their actual proficiency while learning, identify gaps, track progress, and boost motivation. The mock questions are selected from past College English Test Band 4 (CET-4) papers.
4. Mock Exam Answers and Explanations
Provides correct answers with detailed explanations, summarizing key points for each question and analyzing the patterns of question-setting.
Additional features of this supplementary textbook include:
1. Listening and Speaking Guide
Given the limited listening class hours in many schools, students may still have questions after listening to recordings. This supplementary textbook includes a listening and speaking guide (exercise answers and audio transcripts) for post-class review and reference.
2. Red Film Self-Testing
In the section on syllabus vocabulary and phrases, each example sentence and key terms in the key points are printed in red. By using the attached red film to cover these keywords and answers, readers can test their learning progress anytime.
Although all the compilers are experienced teachers working on the front lines of education, this book may still have imperfections. We sincerely welcome readers' corrections.
"When the wind is strong, the waves will break the ship, but with perseverance, we will reach the other side." We sincerely hope this book can become a trusted guide and companion for all students, and like other Huayuan books, it will be loved by everyone.
