Features: > (Revised Edition), edited by Zhang Hanxi and published by FLTRP, is a intensive reading textbook designed for senior undergraduate students of English. As all the texts in this textbook are sourced from authentic English materials from the UK and the US, students from different institutions find it challenging to use and learn. To assist students and self-learners in better understanding and mastering this textbook, we have specially developed its companion material—(Revised Edition) Study Guide. The guide is divided into two volumes, each tailored to the first and second volumes of the original textbook, respectively. Each volume follows the structure of the original textbook and consists of the following four sections for each lesson:
1. Reference Translation: The entire text is translated into Chinese. The translation emphasizes accuracy while striving for fluency, clarity, and ease of understanding.
2. Vocabulary in Bilingual Form: New vocabulary in the text (excluding basic vocabulary for the first and second years of English major curricula) is annotated in English and Chinese, integrated with the context of the lesson. Special attention is given to explaining words that are difficult to find in general dictionaries. The English definitions primarily follow Webster's New World Dictionary of the American Language (Second College Edition).
3. Text Annotations: Some allusions, proper nouns (names of people and places), as well as typical grammatical and rhetorical phenomena in the text are explained in Chinese. The annotations aim to be clear, detailed, and selective, focusing on challenging points. Even simple sentences with complex structures, which may cause confusion or misunderstanding, are analyzed in detail to facilitate self-study.
4. Comprehensive Solutions to Exercises: All exercises in each lesson, including written and oral tasks (except Topics for oral work, which are left for students to practice independently), are provided with appropriate answers. Due to space constraints, only one composition exercise is selected for each lesson. For more flexible exercises, such as paraphrasing and sentence completion, the answers provided are for reference only, and students may have their own solutions.
