Haydn Piano Sonatas Collection IV

Author: Joseph Haydn
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2003-01-01
Features: Determining ornamentation from two perspectives: the practical purpose of the edition, and secondly, the greater volume of modern pianos. Haydn himself preferred a lighter, more delicate piano sound. After establishing these two starting points, some ornaments must be omitted, or certain notes used in the ornaments must be left out. When ornaments are abundant, it might be better to completely omit one or two of them. Ornaments should make the melody more lively and light, not cumbersome and tedious! For the same reason, this book occasionally uses triplets and quintuplets in the rhythmic treatment of ornaments to avoid rigidly rhythmic, stiff "ornamentation."
