The base text used for this edition is one of the 11 existing Shi-annotated editions of Dream of the Red Chamber, the earliest in terms of production date, most authentic in preserving the original form, and also the most incomplete but invaluable one. It was discovered and collected by Mr. Hu Shih in 1927 and is now housed in the Cornell University Library in the United States. The edition is typeset and printed based on the photolithographic version first released in Taiwan in 1961, and it comprehensively includes all relevant materials about this edition from both the original manuscript and the photolithographic version.
