Century Itch · China Ecological Report

Publish Date: 2006-09-01
Features: This book is a panoramic long-form documentary literary work that reflects the current state of forestry ecology and ecological construction in China to date. This nearly 600,000-word ecological documentary was produced as a result of the 2003 "China Environmental Protection Century Tour" by the National People's Congress and the 2004 "100 Literary Artists Go to the Grassroots" initiative by the National Forestry Administration. The author embarked on this project to write a documentary work focused on the national forestry ecological status. Over the course of the project, they visited and investigated forestry grassroots in nine provinces and regions, ranging from the Great Xing'an Mountains, Mohe, Beicun, and the Aolai Forest District in Inner Mongolia in the north, to Qiandao Lake, Tianmu Mountain, the source of the Nujiang River, Xishuangbanna, and the Thai-Myanmar border in the south, connecting to the southern and northern Xinjiang, Tianshan Mountains, Kashgar in the west, involving Heilongjiang, Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Shanxi, Zhejiang, Sichuan, Yunnan, and Guangxi. Covering tens of thousands of kilometers, the work not only documents the "dual crisis" of China's original forests no longer existing in the forest regions but also portrays the spirit of the "Green Forest Heroes" of China, who, after the ban on logging, took the initiative to worry about the world's problems and launched the "Six Major Projects." In some areas, they even voluntarily reduced the main logging quota year after year, striving to achieve the goal of "not cutting a single tree" while pursuing "sustainable development."
However, the author often felt itchy but couldn't find a good solution, so there is one thing worth mentioning with relief: in early 2005, the Ministry of Agriculture held an international conference on energy conservation. Over a dozen experts and scholars from more than ten countries participated in the conference. The meeting reached a consensus on the future development of energy-saving stoves and renewable energy. The energy-saving stove mentioned in this book, which was commended by Premier Wen Jiabao and discovered by the "China Environmental Protection Century Tour" as a "solution" to address the problems of energy waste and environmental pollution, had an outstanding and impressive demonstration at this conference.
Human development and social progress depend on the harmony of timing, geographical conditions, and human effort—none of these can be lacking. This book is a panoramic long-form documentary literary work that reflects the current state of forestry ecology and ecological construction in China to date.
