Features: Huang Zhou consistently adhered to the realist principle that "life is the only source of literary and artistic creation" throughout his artistic career. He pioneered a breakthrough from the decline of Chinese figure painting over hundreds of years since the Ming and Qing dynasties, sparking a century-high peak. His paintings cover a wide range of subjects, excelling in figures, animals, landscapes, and flowers and birds. He was particularly skilled in creating grand-scale works with numerous figures. He applied the excellent cultural and artistic traditions of his homeland to his creative practice, establishing a new era in Chinese figure painting. He depicted the true, good, and beautiful aspects of the working people, earning him the title of a "historical scroll of the new era." In the scenes of life among various ethnic groups, he focused on the beauty of humanity and the poetry of life. His vivid records filled with a sense of presence and dynamic, passionate artistic works inspired aesthetic experiences of an entire generation and profoundly influenced a generation of art workers. Many of Huang Zhou's masterpieces are now held in the Zhongnanhai, the Great Hall of the People, the Fisherman's Wharf State Guesthouse, the Yan Huang Art Museum, the Huang Zhou Art Foundation, Chinese embassies and consulates abroad, as well as in private collections.
Huang Zhou was also a great art entrepreneur. In the 1980s, with immense passion for the development of Chinese art, he poured a great deal of effort into establishing the Chinese Painting Research Institute and the of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, even under poor health conditions. He also funded the establishment of the Yan Huang Art Museum, the first privately operated, publicly supported art museum in China, with his broad-mindedness, approachability, amiability, humility, and high regard for talent, greatly advancing the development of Chinese art in the 20th century. Many artists who received his help have since become pillars of the art world.
The "Collected Essays on Huang Zhou" include critical articles by renowned scholars and artists on Huang Zhou's artistic achievements in Chinese painting, particularly his breakthroughs and contributions to Chinese figure painting and animal painting. It marks a new milestone in the study of Huang Zhou's artistic accomplishments.
