Author: Yan Jiayan (Editor)
Publisher:
Publication Date: 1997-01-01
Features:
1. The novel theory materials collected in this volume span from 1917 to 1927. The chronological order follows the dates of publication or publication of the original works.
2. The scope of selection includes theoretical discussions, critiques, prefaces, monographs, creative talks, letters, and miscellaneous essays that reflect the changes in literary concepts, theoretical achievements, and creative practices of this period.
3. Each selected piece is annotated at the end with the earliest publication or publication location and date.
4. Works of similar nature are prioritized based on earlier publication dates and higher academic value. Others are selected judiciously.
5. This volume primarily collects the theoretical writings on novels by various literary societies, schools, important writers, and critics during the New Literature Movement. It also includes representative theoretical views and articles by writers and critics from the Xueheng School and the Yuanyanghuapai, who differed from the New Literature camp.
6. The texts of the collected works are based on the earliest published or published versions. Any obvious errors in the original (including some foreign texts) that could be verified and corrected have been revised. For those with obvious errors that cannot be corrected or where errors are only suspected, the original form is retained. Texts that use the conventions of the May Fourth era (e.g., using "he" for both male and female or human and object, "there" instead of "where") are generally left unchanged, though minor adjustments may be made in exceptional cases to avoid confusion.
7. When the same Western names or places are translated differently in the collected works, the original translations are generally retained. However, if the same name is translated inconsistently within a single piece, it is standardized.
8. For original texts without punctuation, the editors have added punctuation.
9. The authorship of each piece is generally based on the earliest published version; exceptions are annotated with necessary research notes.
