Is neonatal jaundice at 38 severe?

Patient's question:

My baby is currently 7 days old and has symptoms of jaundice. The local hospital checked and the level was 19.4. The doctor said it's quite serious. Is jaundice level 38 serious for a baby?

Doctor's answer:

Jaundice in infants can be either physiological or pathological. Physiological jaundice usually presents with slightly yellow skin and occasionally a decrease in appetite or a slight decline in feeding. Pathological jaundice, if severe, may cause symptoms such as lethargy, drowsiness, difficulty waking up, crying, loss of the reflex and sucking reflex, opisthotonos, and twitching of the corners of the mouth. If pathological jaundice is confirmed, it is recommended to seek timely medical treatment.
